How Can I Keep from Singing? (No. 5 / nº 5, In Song)
Text / Texte : Diane Boudreau, Quand l’amour passe entre nos voix; Robert Wadsworth Lowry, How Can I Keep from Singing?

As in the first movement of this work, the composer has incorporated the melody, “Quand l’amour passe entre nos voix” by Diane Boudreau and Michelle David.

Comme dans le premier mouvement de ce recueil, la compositrice a inclus ici la mélodie « Quand l’amour passe entre nos voix » de Diane Boudreau et de Michelle David.

lyrics

Longue journée de mi-semaine,
tout nous bouscule et nous entraîne,
mais dans le tumulte, un espoir :
pouvoir chanter ce soir.

Et c’est la vie qui recommence
à petits gestes, à petits pas.
On s’enracine, on fait silence,
on oublie les tracas.

My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth’s lamentation, I hear the sweet,
Tho’ far-off hymn that hails a new creation;

Thro ‘all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul.

Our voices rise and blend together,
Expelling shadows of ennui,
And so we find a world that’s brighter,
Bathed in perfect harmony.

How can I keep from singing?

The mid-week yields a long, hard day,
We’re pushed and led in every way,
Yet hope remains, despite the strife –
The chance to sing tonight.

And so we live a new beginning,
Starting slowly, thinking small.
We root ourselves in peace and quiet;
No more worries for us all.

Ma vie s’écoule comme une chanson sans fin;
au-delà des sanglots de la terre, j’entends le tendre hymne lointain qui salue une nouvelle création.

Malgré tout le tumulte et les querelles,
la musique sonne;
elle fait écho dans mon âme.

Nos voix s’élèvent et se confondent,
chassant les ombres de l’ennui
et nous dévoilent un autre monde
au parfum d’harmonie.

Comment puis-je m’empêcher de chanter?
